The Truth About Stock Returns: Why Am I Losing Even in the Green?

1. The Hidden Costs: Brokerage Fees & Taxes

Your trading app shows a +0.5% return, so you sell feeling good. But when the settlement hits, you break even or even lose money. The culprit? Transaction costs.

  • Buy commission: Paid when buying (often free during promotions)
  • Sell commission: Paid when selling (varies by broker, ~0.015% to 0.198%)
  • Transaction tax: Always paid when selling (domestic stocks ~0.18% to 0.23%)
  • Capital gains tax: (International stocks) 22% on annual gains exceeding $2,500

For domestic stocks, prices must rise at least 0.2% just to break even.

[True Story] Day Trader A's Single Day

Scenario: Invested $10,000 and made 5 round-trip trades in one day.

Return: Sold at break-even (0%) each time.

Result:

  • Total traded: $100,000 ($10,000 x 5 buys x 5 sells)
  • Fees and taxes (~0.25%): -$250 gone

The stock price didn't move, but 2.5% of the capital vanished. This is why frequent trading is dangerous.

2. Check Your Break-Even Point (BEP)

This calculator shows you exactly what price you need to sell at to break even, based on your purchase price and commission rates. Before placing a sell order, always check if the price is above this threshold. That is the first habit of experienced traders.
