Complete Guide to Exchange Rates

What is an Exchange Rate?

An exchange rate is the ratio at which one currency can be exchanged for another. For example, if the USD/KRW rate is 1,300, it means 1 US dollar equals 1,300 Korean won.

The base exchange rate (telegraphic transfer rate) is the standard rate published by banks each business day. Actual exchange rates for cash or wire transfers may differ due to bank margins.

Major Currencies

  • USD (US Dollar): The world's primary reserve currency and the most traded currency globally. Used as the benchmark for international trade and commodity pricing.
  • JPY (Japanese Yen): A safe-haven currency that tends to strengthen during global economic uncertainty. Third most traded currency worldwide.
  • EUR (Euro): The shared currency of 20 European Union member states. Second most traded currency and a major reserve currency.
  • CNY (Chinese Yuan): The official currency of China, increasingly important in global trade. Its value is managed by the People's Bank of China within a trading band.

Travel Exchange Tips

  • Best timing: Monitor exchange rate trends 1-2 months before travel. Exchange when rates dip rather than waiting until the last minute at the airport.
  • Preferential rates: Use internet/mobile banking for 50-90% exchange margin discounts. Some banks offer even better rates through promotional coupons.
  • Credit card vs cash: Credit cards offer competitive exchange rates and earn rewards, but some merchants add surcharges. Carry a mix of both for flexibility.
